Why should you rent a campervan in the USA?

If you’re used to staying in hotels or vacation rentals while traveling, you may be wondering “why the heck would I want to sleep in a van?” And that’s a valid question!
Here are some of the main reasons why we LOVE traveling via campervan and why you should consider it for your next trip:
- It allows you to have more flexibility. Instead of booking hotels everynight and being committed to a schedule, you have more freedom to hop around and adjust your plans. This is especially true out west, where free camping is easier to find.
- You can have some pretty epic backyards everyday! We have stayed in some pretty remote, gorgeous locations in our van that we would’ve missed otherwise.
- Having a kitchen (and even a toilet if you’re lucky!) while you road trip is SO helpful! Need to pee? Just pull over real quick! Want lunch? Find a cool viewpoint and cook with nature out your window!
- Campervan rentals in the USA can sometimes be a bit pricey. But one perk is that it combines your rental car and lodging into one, which could be cheaper overall. Plus by having a kitchen you can save money by cooking most of your meals!
- While camping in a tent is a great, affordable way to travel, renting a campervan allows you to not pack and unpack everyday.
- If you plan to get your own campervan someday, renting one first is a good way to test it out!
But it’s important to know that van life is not all sunshine and rainbows. We share the pros AND cons of van life in this post (coming soon), so you’re more mentally prepared for what to expect.
Things to consider before choosing a campervan rental

Before we dive into the best campervan rentals in the USA, there are quite a few things you should think about, in order to choose the right option for you.
How many people are joining you?
While some campervan rentals can fit 4 people, we personally think campervans are most comfortable with 2 people, unless you don’t plan to spend much time inside the van.
Have a large group? We’d suggest looking into an RV rental instead, which will be more spacious.
Are you bringing a pet?
There are many campervan rentals in the USA that are pet friendly, for an extra fee. However, it may not always make sense to bring your pet with you.
For example, if you’re planning to visit National Parks, pets are NOT allowed on trails at most parks (there are some exceptions). You can leave your pets in your campervan, as long as it’s cool enough and you have temperature control. But if your entire trip will be focused on the parks, we’d suggest leaving your pup at home.
Size of the campervan
This nice thing about campervans is that they are smaller than RVs. But still be mindful of the size of the campervan, especially related to the activities you want to do.
Will you be going into cities? If so, try to choose something smaller. Plan to visit National Parks? While most parks have larger vehicle parking, not every trailhead does. Also, some National Parks have length restrictions for roads, so make sure to check that in advance before choosing a rig.

What amenities do you want?
As you peruse the different campervan rentals, pay attention to the different amenities each offers, as these will vary. Having (or not having) certain amenities can really make or break the experience. Here are a handful of things to consider:
- What is the sleeping area like? Is there a permanent bed or will you have to convert the bed everyday?
- What types of appliances does the kitchen have?
- Can you cook inside or is the kitchen outside?
- Are bedding and cooking supplies included or is it an extra cost?
- Does the campervan have a toilet? For us, having a toilet in a van is a must. If you’re camping out on public land, without any amenities, going to the bathroom (especially #2!) will be a lot harder.
- Is there a shower or will you need to utilize campground showers?
- What is the power situation like? Are there solar panels, which will allow you to boondock? Or will you have to plug into shore power at a paid campground everyday?
- Do you need 4×4 or AWD to access the places you want to visit?
Will you be starting and ending in the same spot?
The easiest way to rent a campervan is to start and end in the same spot. However, some companies do offer one way rentals, which allow you to drop off the van at a different location.
While there is usually an extra fee for this, sometimes companies offer deals to book one way rentals. If a campervan rental company has multiple locations in the USA, they occasionally need help transporting the van from one location to the other. And they’ll give you a deal if you pick up in one city and drop off in another!
Age requirements
Most campervan rentals in the USA require you to be at least 21 years old, with many having an age requirement of 25. Make sure to check this beforehand!
Pricing & extra fees
We are listing some very general pricing for all of these campervan rentals, but to see the exact pricing, make sure to plug in your exact dates. Some companies charge per DAY, while others charge per NIGHT. Make sure to check this, as it will impact the cost! Keep in mind that pricing will be higher in the summertime, holidays, or whenever peak season is for the area.
Also, many of these companies charge deposits, plus extra fees for cleaning, rental items, insurance (most regular insurance does NOT cover campervan rentals), and extra mileage, if there is not unlimited mileage. Make sure to add in these costs!
16 Best Campervan Rental Companies in the USA
While this isn’t an exhaustive list of every campervan rental company in the USA, all of these companies have been vetted by us (experienced van lifers) in detail to ensure that they will provide a comfortable and stress-free experience!
Nationwide Campervan Rentals
These are great choices to consider if you’ll be starting from outside of the west coast, want more flexibility in where you can pick up, or want to start in one state and end in another.
Outdoorsy

Locations: All over the US!
Cost: Varies heavily depending on the type of rig you choose.
Outdoorsy is a peer to peer RV and campervan marketplace. It’s just like Airbnb, but for RVs and campervans!
On Outdoorsy you can find campervans, trailers, Class C RVs, and giant motorhomes, ranging in price. Which means there is truly something for every group size, travel style, and budget!
This is a good option if you plan to visit an area that may not be as popular with campervan rentals and has less options to choose from. But before choosing a rig, make sure to read reviews! Since these are managed by personal owners vs. a company, you will want to ensure you’re getting a reliable and clean vehicle.
GoCamp

Locations: All over the US!
Cost: Varies heavily depending on the type of rig you choose.
Similar to Outdoorsy, GoCamp is a campervan marketplace, where owners rent their vans out while they aren’t using them (campervans are made to explore, afterall!). On their platform you can find a wide variety of van types, interior styles and layouts, and price points.
Each one will come with different amenities, so make sure to read through the listing in detail so you understand what you’re getting!
Campervan rentals in the Western USA
In our opinion, van life is definitely best out in the west! Here you can find tons of free public land to camp on, wide open spaces to explore, beautiful National Parks, and a mix of scenery, from the desert, to the mountains, to the coast.
There are countless campervan rental options out west, but below are what we consider to be the best of the best!
Blacksford

Locations: Bozeman, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
Cost: Starting at $250 per day, with higher prices during peak season.
Blacksford rents a mix of campervans and Class C RVs out of three locations located close to some of the best National Parks in the West and Southwest. And unlike some of the other campervan rentals in the USA, they are only renting out factory models, like Revel (4×4) and Solis, not vans that they converted themselves. This is a great option if you want to try out one of these specific rigs before buying!
While the pricing may be higher than some other campervan rentals, it does some with a lot more amenities. Each of their campervan rentals comes with unlimited mileage (a HUGE perk!), full kitchens AND kitchen supplies, a coffee maker, basic bedding, towels, cleaning gear, camping chairs, and generators (only some models). Oh and toilets AND showers. So all you need to bring is yourself and your personal items!
Boho Campervans

Location: Phoenix
Cost: Between $229-$249 per night.
Boho Campervans is a custom van builder based out of the Phoenix area that also rents out a variety of different Promaster vans, with some that can fit up to 4 people. These vans all offer a kitchen, a seating area, designated sleeping area (no converting required!), and an air conditioner, which is a must in Arizona!
And while they do not come with toilets (you can rent one though!), they do have a space saving indoor shower and a heated outdoor shower. Plus each rental comes with all of the essentials you need, from bedding to kitchenware. As well as some fun and useful extras, like headlamps and playing cards!
Moterra Campervans

Locations: Jackson (WY), Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Whitefish (MT).
Cost: Ranging from $259-$299 per night.
Moterra is hands down one of the best “chain” campervan rental companies in the USA. We have seen these out and about a bunch while out west and they are super nice!
They offer three different Sprinter Van types, two low roof vans (with pop tops) and a high roof van. All of the vans are 4WD and 19 feet long, which means you will be able to park them in parking spots easily, plus drive roads with length restrictions, like the Going to the Sun Road at Glacier!
But what makes them stand out to us is that they offer some of the most “livable” campervan rentals we have seen. They each come with an indoor kitchen (with the option to cook outside too!), a seating area, and a bed. Plus all of the items you’ll need for each, like bedding, towels, and dishes. You can even rent Starlink (a lifesaver if you need to work remotely), bike racks, campground games, an awning, and more!
The only downside is that only an average of 100 miles/night is included in the rate. You can pay extra for more mileage, but this can add up fast!
Stoked to Camp tip: If you’re torn between their vans, our personal pick would be their high roof camper! Not only will you not have to pop up the ceiling to be able to stand, but it has an enclosed bathroom with a toilet and shower. And as a couple that travels together in a van full time, having this bathroom privacy is VERY nice!
Native Campervans

Locations: Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City.
Cost: The pricing ranges from $69-$249 per night, depending on the size you choose, season, etc.
Native Campervans offers three different sized campervans in a handful of cities out west, all located close to National Parks, epic hikes, and fun cities. All of their campervans come equipped with everything you need for your trip, minus a toilet or shower.
However, they do have mileage packages you must pay for on top of the nightly rate. If you choose a set number of miles you can get refunded for what you don’t use and if you plan to explore far, unlimited mileage is an option.
Based on our van life experience, we think the Biggie is the best choice, as you can stand in it easily (without a pop top), it has an indoor kitchen (which is SO nice for rainy or windy days), and more space to hang out. While the other two are certainly doable, they will be a bit tighter and feel more like roughin’ it.
Peace Vans

Location: Seattle
Cost: All options are $285/night, plus extra insurance costs.
Peace Vans is a Seattle based VW Camper repair and restoration business. In fact, they are the largest of their kind in the US! And not only do they fix up old (and even new electric VW vans), but they also rent out a handful of different campervans. From a more modern Mercedes Sprinter, smaller Metris vans, to super cool, vintage Vanagons!
While each option is very different in terms of looks, they all offer indoor kitchens, beds, and everything you need for your adventure. And as coffee lovers, one thing they do that’s super cool is they let you pick your coffee brew type and they’ll grind the beans for you!
Roadsurfer

Location: Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle. Plus even Miami, Canada, and various countries across Europe!
Cost: They claim to start at $115/night, but when testing out several timeframes, most nights were between $205-$239 a night, plus service fees.
Roadsurfer offers a mix of campervan, plus RV rentals across many major destinations in the US (and abroad)! During one of our most recent Utah camping trips we saw SO many of these rigs on the road and at the National Parks. And for good reason! They offer some very nice and well equipped options.
Our personal favorite is the Couple Condo or Horizon Hopper, which both offer a kitchen, sleeping area, plus bathroom (with a shower)! The Horizon Hopper is AWD, which is great for visiting many states out west.
Their rentals come with a camping table and chairs, plus a free kitchen box with cooking supplies. Bedding does cost extra, though. They also offer different add-ons, like bringing your dog (for a fee) or adding on a bike rack!
Tierra Traveler

Location: Bozeman
Cost: Between $325-$395 per night.
Tierra Traveler offers three beautifully designed Sprinter Vans, with wood ceilings and accents. They come with all of the essentials, including a foldaway camp toilet, plus some outdoor gear so you can enjoy meals outside. And as an extra perk, they offer 200 miles per day when traveling between Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming! So feel free to hop around Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier National Parks without worrying about distance.
VanCraft

Locations: Salt Lake City, Denver, and San Diego.
Cost: Prices vary depending on which model you choose, but we saw the per day cost starting at $189 for the Rover model.
VanCraft offers 3 models of campervans to rent in the Western US including a micro Nissan or Chevy Express van, a 144 Sprinter, and 170 Sprinter. All vans come with a bathroom and shower built in or, in the micro vans, the option to rent a cartridge toilet.
These vans have a rugged look that makes them appear to be ready for all your adventures. And inside they are designed with thought and look very comfortable to hang out in.
We also like that the rental comes fully stocked. You’ll get camping gear like chairs, a shovel, and a first aid kit. Fresh linens including sheets, pillows, and bath towels come standard as well, which is a nice touch!
Wandervans

Locations: Boise, Bend, Coeur d’ALene/Spokane, Glacier (MT), Phoenix, Portland (OR), Provo (UT), Salt Lake City, and San Francisco.
Cost: Between $105-$180 per day, depending on the location and van type.
Wandervans is a (mostly) western USA based campervan rental company with three sizes to choose from. Each one offers a bed, a bench, a fridge and a sink. Unfortunately all cooking (minus boiling water) is required to be done outside.
While they may not be the fanciest option, they tend to be more affordable than some of the luxury campervan rentals we mentioned! However, they include less items, so make sure to check what they provide and decide if the extras you’ll need to buy or rent make the cost worth it!
South, Midwest, and East Coast Campervan Rentals
Can’t make the trek out west? Don’t worry! With the rise of van life in general, more campervan rentals have been popping up in the south, midwest, and east coast. While van life requires a bit more planning in those regions (like booking campsites every night), it’s still an amazing way to explore!
Glamp Mobile

Locations: Concord (NH)
Cost: Ranging from $200-$400 per night, depending on the month and length of the trip.
Out of all of the campervan rentals we have shared so far, Glamp Mobile is the most similar to our own van! Inside you’ll find a full kitchen (one model even has a microwave!), a wet bath with a toilet and shower, plus solar panels.
They also are very well designed. Their Glampmobile in particular is stunning, with butcher block counters, a subway tile backsplash, and wood ceilings. It’s the “homiest” feeling campervan out of all of the ones listed!
Located in New Hampshire, these would be an amazing rig for an EPIC New England fall road trip! And if you’re worried about the cold, don’t fret, they have heaters and are four season ready!
Moterra Campervans

Locations: Portland, Maine
Cost: Ranging from $259-$299 per night.
Besides the many west coast locations, Moterra also has a location out east in Portland, Maine! This is the perfect launching off point to explore Acadia National Park, hike in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, or see the historic sites in Boston.
Ondevan

Locations: Fort Lauderdale/Miami, Florida
Cost: Between $79-$149 per night, depending on the van.
Ondevan is a Florida based campervan rental company. And with multiple National Parks nearby (like the Everglades), it makes for the perfect adventure vehicle!
They have a couple main options to choose from. First is more simple, with just a mattress in the back and an outdoor kitchen set up. While the second is a larger Promaster van, with an elevated bed, cabinets, and a kitchen counter area. Regardless of which campervan you pick, it will come with bedding and cookware of course because it’s Florida, beach chairs are included!
Vander Outdoors

Locations: Washington, DC
Cost: Ranging between $144-$215 per night.
Up for an east coast road trip? Check out Vander Outdoors! Based in DC (which is super close to SO many outdoor spots!), they offer three different campervan models to rent. Including a tiny little RAM Promaster City, which makes great use of its little space with a convertible bench to bed set up, plus a kitchen. And our favorite, the DMV Cruiser, which is a standard size Promaster with a beautiful modern design!
Vanish Campervan

Locations: Austin and New York City
Cost: Rates range from $159 and $399 per day. Weekdays are cheaper!
Vanish makes some gorgeous, luxury campervan rentals, each complete with a kitchen, seating area, bed, AND a toilet (with some even having indoor showers). They are seriously stunning vans!
And the best part? The rental includes everything you will need, including 200 miles per day, as well as add-ons, like bug screens, bike racks, etc. Plus they are dog friendly and have some of the lower pet rates ($40) we have seen among the other options.
Voyager Campervans

Locations: Minneapolis or Ham Lake, Minnesota
Cost: Between $79-$249 per night.
One of the greatest surprises on our travels to all 50 states was Minnesota. And if you want to see this state’s striking North Shore (along Lake Superior), check out Voyager Campervans! They offer a mini van rental, which is good for one person or a couple that doesn’t mind being very close. As well as two standard Promaster options with one that can fit 4 people (it has TWO beds)!
Walden Campervans

Location: Acton, MA (near Boston)
Cost: Between $299-$425 per night
Walden Campervans offers a fleet of sleek, functional campervan rentals, plus a Land Rover Defender. Choose from a campervan with a pop up tent or a fully indoors Sprinter or Promaster, which each have their own color scheme and vibe.
While this may be a pricier choice, there are so many little details that prove the quality is a lot higher than other campervan rentals. For example, they have nice fans and reading lights by the bed, high quality Pendleton mugs and plates, and a Fellow kettle.
There are no toilets in the van, but you can rent one if you don’t plan to stay at traditional campgrounds. Plus they offer a rack that can fit bikes or skis, so you truly can make this your adventure rig!
Wandervans

Locations: Charleston (SC) and Duluth (MN)
Cost: Between $105-$160 per day, depending on the location and van type.
We shared about Wandervans above, but beyond their western locations, they also have two other locations across the US, in Duluth, Minnesota (perfect for a North Shore road trip!) and Charleston, South Carolina. These two locations only offer their medium and large campervans, just FYI!
